The latest Defra announcement about the Sustainable Farming Initiative (SFI) has been published.

Shouler & Son’s rural service professionals agree that the latest announcement (published 30 March) confirms much of what was already known when the SFI policy document was published last December (2021) and on which the firm commented at the time.

Payment levels for each standard have now been finalised in the latest announcement, with headline levels and payments of soil standards as:

Arable & horticultural soils at £22 per hectare at introductory level and £40 per hectare at intermediate level.

Improved grassland soils at £28 per hectare at introductory level and £58 per hectare at intermediate level.

Applications are expected to be open from June (2022) and will remain open to allow farmers the opportunity of applying at a time that works best for them.
